Biting the bitter peel

This is a particularly interesting topic for me, being a young gay male and someone who likes to adopt a contrarian point of view I think that this is a relevant topic to write about. Gay marriage is in the headlines now, more than ever. And while I believe that we should all be treated as equals, irrespective of race, sexuality or gender, I'm not sure whether gay marriage is a good idea.

Lets begin by defining marriage courtesy of Merriam-Webster dictionary:

a (1) : the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2) : the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage <same-sex marriage>

Traditional marriage occurs typically in a church setting conducted by a minister. Most religions consider homosexuality as a sin, that we are an abomination, but with the ever changing trends of the world, marriage equality is becoming widely accepted. Many Countries have now legalized civil union-ship and it took us a long time to get to this point so can't we just be happy with this? We've accomplished a lot over the past few years, we've managed to alter society's perception of the homosexual community and gain civil union-ships. But even after all these accomplishments there are groups who are still not happy, we're alway taught from a young age to be grateful with what we have, so why is it any different when it comes to this topic?

With the current state of today is this the most important topic in a few people's lives? Shouldn't we be using our voices in protest and stand united against the war that continues to rage on, killing countless innocent people caught in the crossfire, in the Middle East? Equality is a huge issue but the war is a bigger issue, soldiers are putting their lives at risk everyday and all we are concerned about is whether or not we can obtain a piece of paper to show that we truly love our partner. At the end of the day that's all it really is, a piece of paper that shows we love someone.

Until next time..
